How can I protect myself during cold and flu season?

With cold and flu season quickly approaching, PIH Medical Director Rob White has a few tips to help prevent getting the bug!

  1. Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer frequently, especially when touching common areas or shaking others hands.
  2. Avoid touching your mouth, nose, or eyes unless you’ve washed your hands.
  3. Get enough sleep, a good measure is 7-9 hours a night.
  4. Get your flu shot annually.
  5. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables to help boost your immune system.
  6. Drink 2-3L of water daily! This helps nourish your cells so they can fight off infection.

Prevention is the key to helping your body have the right internal environment to fight off things that cause colds and the flu. If for some reason you do get a cold or the flu, make sure you talk to your primary care provider or the local pharmacist for help choosing the right over the counter medicine to take, so you can have the best health outcomes.
