Foundations

Foundations

Foundation drilling and construction represent another scope of services offered for transmission and substation projects. Phillips & Jordan (P&J) continues to evolve and integrate related services provide clients with a complete civil construction solution either as a bundled, full-scope package or independently priced depending on the procurement strategy or request. Our team can deliver a safe, quality product on your next transmission line project ready for your chosen line contractor to set poles and string lines.

The P&J Foundations Construction Difference

  • Integrity – We build trust by earning it.
  • Safety – We are a People First company guided by a commitment to care.
  • Quality – Our commitment to quality ensures we will get the job done right, the first time.
  • Production – Clients can count on our pioneering spirit and our roll-up-our-sleeves, “can do” attitude.
  • We are a national contractor, registered to do business in all 50 states.
  • We provide turnkey ROW construction services — We can take care of everything on your next transmission line project, short of placing poles and stringing wire.
  • Cost Reduction — Our combined experience and services cut down on management redundancies for different scopes of work allowing us to pass on direct savings to our clients from the elimination of project oversight, supervision, and mechanical services.
  • We provide early engagement on schedule and scope development.
  • Performing foundation drilling in-house makes it easier for access and drilling operations to communicate and plan around one another.

Representative Projects

FPL 500kV Rebuild, Phase A (FL)

As the EPC prime contractor on this project, P&J managed the design firm and quality control firm while self-performing the foundation construction. The project consisted of design and construction of 480 foundations for the planned rebuild of twin 500kv transmission lines along approximately 30 miles of ROW. Most of the ROW overlapped with the South Florida Water Management District’s ROW. Project Highlights: 480 drilled shafts, 6’ and 6.5’ diameter, 25-35’ depth drilled shafts • 13,592 CY of concrete • 688 tons of rebar • 30 miles of transmission line ROW • 58.5 miles of access roads to maintain

FPL 500kV Rebuild, Phase H1 (FL)

As the EPC prime contractor on this project, P&J managed the design firm and quality control firm while self-performing the foundation construction. The project consisted of design and construction of 346 foundations for the planned rebuild of twin 500kv transmission lines along approximately 30 miles of ROW. Project Highlights: 346 drilled shafts, 6’ and 6.5’ diameter, 39’ depth drilled shafts • 13,250 CY of concrete • 817 tons of rebar • 28 miles of transmission line ROW

Dominion Energy Hickory Grove Tap (VA)

Foundation construction drilling for 8 miles of transmission line rebuild in Virginia. P&J was responsible for drilling shafts 6’-6.5’ in diameter and 13’-18’ foundation depths for monopole and three-pole structures. The project was completed during scheduled outages. Coordination with the owner, prime contractor, access contractor and multiple natural gas owners was accomplished with good scheduling and communication. Project Highlights: 19 drilled shafts, 6’ and 6.5’ diameter, 13’-18’’ depth drilled shafts • 398 CY of concrete • 26,917 lbs of rebar • 8 miles of transmission line ROW

Dominion Energy Pioneer Substation – Backbone Structures (VA)

Project involved installation of two (2) 230kV backbone structure foundations on a joint Dominion/NOVEC Substation in Manassas, Virginia. P&J installed four (4) drilled shaft foundations on this project, 6’ in diameter and 20’ deep. The owner’s schedule required P&J to mobilize quickly and efficiently to meet their deadline. Project Highlights: 4 drilled shafts, 6’ in diameter, 20’ depth drilled shafts • 106 CY of concrete • 13,882 lbs of rebar

FPL Emergency Foundations (FL)

In response to a tower structural failure in Osceola County, Florida, P&J was contracted to construct a new H tower. The project timeline was a significant challenge for P&J’s team. P&J had to work with a private landowner to build heavy equipment access. Materials procurement, geotechnical investigation, and design had to be fast-tracked to complete, review, and approve a foundation design in four (4) days following the initial call from the owner. P&J improved or built 1.25 miles of access roads, installed SWPPP controls, and mobilized an entire drill crew and equipment compliment in three (3) days. Foundations were drilled and poured by the end of the sixth (6th) day. Forms were removed, demobilization completed, and foundation design concrete strength was achieved in 10 days following the initial call to P&J. Project Highlights: 346 drilled shafts, 6’ and 6.5’ diameter, 39’ depth drilled shafts • 13,250 CY of concrete • 817 tons of rebar • 28 miles of transmission line ROW

Georgia Power Goat Rock Foundation (GA)

P&J was contracted directly by the owner for drilling two shafts 10.5’ in diameter and 26’ foundation depth monopoles in solid granite rock. The project was completed during scheduled outages. Coordination with the owner and access contractor was accomplished with good scheduling and communication. Project Highlights: 2 drilled shafts • 10.5’ diameter • 26’ depth drilled shafts

Dominion Energy Farmwell Substation Foundation (VA)

P&J was subcontracted to install 250 drilled shafts and formed foundations for a new substation in Ashburn, VA area. The prime’s schedule required P&J to mobilize quickly and efficiently to meet their deadline. Project Highlights: 250 drilled shafts • 1.5’ to 3.5’ in diameter • 14’ depth drilled shafts • 62 formed foundations ranging between 1.4 CY to 24 CY
