Project Description

The Northeast/Pocono Reliability Project was a $335M effort being implemented by PPL Electric Utilities that involved building new electrical substations and a new 230 kV transmission line to strengthen the electric grid and upgrade the delivery of electric service to 250,000 customers in Northeast Pennsylvania.

P&J’s Contribution

P&J was contracted to support construction of the new 230 kV transmission line and associated 138 kV transmission lines (66 miles total) that will connect multiple PPL Electric Utilities substations to the existing high-voltage power grid in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. Major items of work performed by P&J for the Northeast/Pocono Reliability Project included clearing of the new ROW approximately 150′-wide, grinding and disposal of vegetative debris, installation and removal of mats in wetland areas, construction of gravel access roads, installation and maintenance of erosion control measures associated with clearing operations, removal of danger trees, and vegetation management.

P&J was the lead co-permit holder for the project and was responsible for the management of all environmental impacts and wetland mitigation in accordance with Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and local agency requirements. After line construction was completed, P&J was responsible for site restoration in accordance with land owner commitment agreements.
