Do you practice defensive driving?
Sometimes we get caught up in our daily activities and need to step back and remember to practice defensive driving. Defensive driving means protecting yourself from more than just other drivers: it’s about thinking ahead and anticipating hazards so that you can avoid accidents before they happen.
Below are some key points you can practice whether driving a company vehicle or your own:
- Do not drive distracted. Don’t text, email, etc. while driving. Even a phone conversation can cause a distraction.
- Manage your speed for road conditions and weather.
- Look far enough ahead to ensure you have adequate space for stopping. (12-15 secs. ahead)
- Maintain situation awareness and continually scan your mirrors.
- Ensure your vehicle is in good working order by checking your tires, brakes, and wipers.
